Remedial Massage for Desk Workers

Remedial Massage for Desk Workers

“Many Australians are sitting longer than they are sleeping” – Professor David Dunstan, Head, Physical Activity Laboratory Baker IDI

Studies have shown that sitting for 8 or more hours a day can cause a multitude of negative physical effects. Australians working full time in jobs that involve ‘mostly sitting’ spend an average of 6.3hrs per day sitting at work.

Sitting at a desk for prolonged periods can increase the risk of muscle imbalances in the body. These include muscle tightness, limited range of motion, body aches and pain. It can cause tightness in the hamstrings, pectoral muscles and hip flexors, and can contribute to back pain.

However, there are a few ways to manage and prevent desk posture-related injuries.

Stretching: Setting phone reminders to get up every 30 minutes or so, to take short walks or stretch can be invaluable. Stretching the hands, wrists, and fingers, rolling the shoulders, and rotating the neck can help lengthen tight muscles.

Use a sit/stand desk: Desks that can alternate between sitting and standing positions are becoming more readily available in offices. Making the most of these desks can prevent poor posture and encourage frequent movement.

Remedial massage/myotherapy: Even with regular stretching during long work hours, the muscles and joints will feel sore and achy from time to time. Remedial massage and myotherapy can assist with upkeep for the body to maintain musculoskeletal health. Treatments aim to release muscle tension, improve range of motion, and correct muscular imbalances using individually tailored stretching and strengthening advice.
