Myofascial Cupping for Muscular Release
You’ve seen the round marks on social media or Olympic athletes, but are you aware of how cupping can help tight muscles? These marks are from a therapy called ‘Myofascial Cupping’ or ‘Cupping’ and it involves the use of glass, bamboo, or plastic cups. The cups are placed against the skin with light suction which draws the underlying skin, tissues, and blood cells towards the surface.

Myofascial Cupping for Muscular Release

What is Myofascial Cupping?

You’ve seen the round marks on social media or Olympic athletes, but are you aware of how cupping can help tight muscles? These marks are from a therapy called ‘Myofascial Cupping’ or ‘Cupping’ and it involves the use of glass, bamboo, or plastic cups. The cups are placed against the skin with light suction which draws the underlying skin, tissues, and blood cells towards the surface.

Originating from ancient Chinese therapy, cupping helps release congested blood flow to restore optimum function of soft tissues.

Why does it leave a mark? Does it hurt?

Don’t be fooled by the marks – myofascial cupping is a relatively painless therapy! Depending on how much suction is applied to the cup, there may be some temporary soreness in the area.

The marks are a common effect after cupping, and they indicate the level of blood stagnation and toxin accumulation in the body. It’s expected that tighter muscles will produce darker marks, which naturally fade after a week.

So, how will it benefit me?

Cupping helps increase movement and mobility by stretching the connective tissues and fascia under the skin. Other benefits include:

  • Increasing blood flow to assist with muscle tension
  • Assist in reducing adhesions/knots in muscle fibres
  • Increasing circulation and fluid movement
  • Assists with recovery post-injury
  • Improves and maintains soft tissue function
