Remedial Massage for Stress Relief

Stress is a very common and normal physical response to the demands of everyday life. As impossible as it is to avoid stress completely, finding ways to manage the stress is effective in improving the quality of life. One of the ways that many people manage stress is the use of remedial massage for stress relief.

Effects of stress

Stress can contribute to physical effects on the body such as tightness in the muscles of the neck, shoulders, and head. Remedial massage can relax and loosen up the tension in these areas to help relieve pain.

Common physical symptoms of stress include:

  • Aches and pains
  • Exhaustion or trouble sleeping
  • Headaches, dizziness
  • Jaw clenching/teeth grinding
  • Stomach or digestive problems

Stress can lead to psychological symptoms such as:

  • Anxiety and irritability
  • Depression
  • Panic attacks

How can Remedial Massage / Myotherapy help manage stress?

Headaches related to tightness in the neck and head muscles are targeted using deep tissue massage to relieve tension. For some people, jaw clenching is a common symptom of stress. Massage on the muscles of the face and jaw is an effective tool in relaxing and relieving pain caused by jaw clenching and grinding.

Massage triggers a relaxation response by increasing the mood-enhancing chemicals - endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin – and reducing the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline. Mood and sleep patterns can be improved by massage, with research supporting that the quality of sleep is increased following a massage.

Here at Western Myotherapy, our goal is to work with you to help relieve stress levels. While remedial massage can temporarily alleviate stress after one session, a regular treatment plan with a qualified Myotherapist or Remedial Massage Therapist will be more beneficial for individuals managing chronic stress.
